Independence Day Tribute Pot

This stunning three piece pot celebrates America’s Independence. It is slip decorated in museum yellow, copper, and manganese, has sgraffito accents, and numerous applied and hand sculpted details. Note the sculpted eagles, flag, shield, and cannonballs. It has fancy scrolled handles and delicate pierce work on the lid. A truly one of a kind pot. Measures 16.75 inches tall over all.

The pedestal base measures 6.25 inches. It has slip decorated stars and banding in museum yellow and manganese slip-trailed detail. The inscription on the base reads – “When in the course of human events it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation”. These majestic words are the preamble to the Declaration of Independence – July 4, 1776. This is the document that created our country and once and for all separated us from our colonial master, Great Britain.



The second sentence of the Declaration of Independence has been called “one of the best known sentences in the English language” and “the most potent and consequential words in American history”. We have placed that sentence on the body of this great pot. It reads – “We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness”. The other panel is inscribed with the 13 colonies who signed The Declaration –New Hampshire, Georgia, Massachusetts, New York, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Connecticut, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, & South Carolina. Also on the body the artist has added an applied eagle and two slip decorated cannons. The uppermost rim of the body has applied flowers and a delicate vine border in copper – the artist has also added tiny stars slip decorated in museum yellow. The base has 3 fancy scrolled handles applied to the sides and back.

The lid has slip decorated stars and banding in museum yellow and illuminated dots. It has delicate manganese squiggle detail at the outer most edge. The artist has added a complex and delicate incised pattern as the final border to this incredible piece. Resting inside the incised border are five hand sculpted symbols that are significant to our country – Eagle, Shield, Declaration of Independence, Flag, & Cannonballs. Beautifully sculpted, these symbols add unique and one of a kind detail to this incredible Independence Day Pot. Wood-firing # 216.
